This years' congress had the title "Rapidly Expanding Cities in an Urbanizing World". We heard fascinating key studies from Aleppo, Duncan Village, Calcutta, Istanbul, Sao Paulo and south America. The discussions dealt with the characteristics of "unplanned" and fast growing settlements, and we learned a lot about the efficiency of informal patterns but also about the risks of the accelerated growth and possible new roles of planning. It's a pleasure for us to serve already this years' presentations and lectures .
Next years' congress will be set from 3rd to 6th of May 2007 and there are also first ideas for the topic.
The SCUPAD committee has some new members, also Roberta Gratz and David Guggenheim stepped back after many years of wonderful work. SCUPAD says "Thank you" again!

The 2006 congress now already looks very promising. Speakers from Syria, India, South Africa etc. have confirmed to give lectures about this years' issue "Rapidly Expanding Cities in an Urbanizing World". This quote tells a lot: "The study of cities is today marked by a paradox: much of the urban growth of the 21st century is taking place in the developing world, but many of the theories of how cities function remain rooted in the developed world." Read more in the prerview about the coming congress; and you can register already of course! We will send the "regular" anual invitations (including the detailed congress scedule) during the next weeks. This year's moderation will be done by our experienced "ex-president" Franz Oswald from Switzerland.

During the next two or three weeks, we hope to provide the final schedule for the '05 Congress. Meanwhile, we've just finished the Newsletter 2004/05 (it contains a review of the '04 Congress). The 2005 Congress title is "Metamorphosis 1960s – 2040: Challenges of Shaping the Future". We will discuss massive urban planning projects in the 60's and preconceived ideas ("Le Corbusier") as well as citizen participation, incremental change and democratic processes ("Jane Jacobs"), that have gained new influence and increasingly dominate current thinking. Let's see if we can find some proposals for future strategies out of these paradigms. And we will also celebrate SCUPAD's 40th Birthday, so we'd be happy about your Registration. Please also check out our new congress and membership fees (we decided to lower the costs for young professionals) and also a more detailed version of the SCUPAD statutes.

While we keep working on the preparation of the next Congress (the next Committee meeting will be set in Jerusalem next week), we have got more from the past one for you. Brad Lander passed us his ' 04 congress presentation and also the full paper that developed out of it, and Laura Balbo also sent an abstract of her '04 lecture. The 2004 slideshow (finally we got the pictures!) shows that we had a lot of fun and very rich discussions together. And our FAQ's now contain a summary of our official SCUPAD statutes .

Some days ago, we had a wonderful Congress in Salzburg. The opening event (a role play where Bruno and David acted as Mayors seeking to get elected on an open/closed city platform) led us to excellent speakers and lots of ambitious plenary and workgroup discussions; this made us feel excited and relaxed at the same time. Also, the evenings in front of the fireplace in the sitting room and the barbecue were wonderful as usual. And we gained some young and new members also! We hope to show you more in the review section as soon as we can get speakers' papers, photos and other materials. Don't forget to check on the new members of the committee - and a billion thanks to Franz, Marco and Bruno who left the Committee in May. Anyway, you can also register for the next year.
