Hartmut Arras - President
Born in Germany, studied Architecture (Germany), holds a Master of Science (M.S.) in City and Regional Planning (IIT, Chicago, USA) and a Dr. Ing. Raumplanung (on housing policy and city development). In 1993, was visiting Professor at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Faculty for Social Sciences. Lived in Basel, Switzerland between 1968 - 2004; now living in Berlin, Germany. Worked for a few years as an architect, then as consultant in an Institute of applied economic research (prognos, Basel). In 1984 co-founded a foundation for shaping the future (SYNTROPIE - Stiftung fuer Zukunftsgestaltung, Basel) and has been President since 1995. Numerous projects in the fields of urban development, urban renewal, housing policy, urban traffic, scenario writing and participation. Mediator in a conflict through browncoal digging, moderator of various public fora on urban problems, coach for municipal fora in Bulgaria, moderator of a network of Associations of local Authorites of South-Eastern Europe and of a working-group for founding an Association of local Authorities in Georgia. Member of the German Association of City and Regional Planners (Vereinigung der Stadt-, Regional- und Landesplaner e.V. (SRL), Berlin; member of the board 1994 - 2000.
Ivan Stanič - Vice President for external affairs
Born in Sweden, lived in Serbia and India before enrolling at the Faculty of Architecture in Ljubljana. Was the national representative for Yugoslavia in the European Assembly of Students of Architecture (EASA). After graduating in architecture at the University of Ljubljana, attended a post-graduate course in planning. Worked as research assistant at Oxford Brookes University as a Chevening scholar. Present professional interests include planning regulation, participative methods in planning, communication techniques and publishing. Employed as a researcher at the Urban Planning Institute of Slovenia. Editor of the magazine Urbani izziv.
Han Joosten - Vice President for internal affairs
Born in 1959 and still living in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, has studied human geography and regional planning at the Free University in Amsterdam (1977-1986, drs.-degree). He has started his carreer as a market researcher in the field of office and shopping centre development at Kolpron Consultants in Rotterdam. In the year 1990 he moved to Berlin to become the managing director of the Kolpron Stadtentwicklung- und Immobilienforschungsgesellschaft (real estate consultancy). His office grew up to 7 academic researchers and he advised private developers, investors and banks, but also the city government of Berlin and cities in Brandenburg on many important issues, like residential projects, shopping streets and demographic developments. Since 1995 he is working for the largest Dutch residential developer Bouwfonds, a housing company at that time owned by the Dutch municipalities. Han is a member of Scupad since 1990.
Catelijne Elissen - Secretary & editor of the newsletter
Catelijne Elissen is from The Netherlands. In 1999 she began studying Architecture at Delft University of Technology from which she holds a Master’s degree in Urbanism. Her Master’s thesis involved research about urban regeneration of post-industrial cities in NW Europe. She presented her thesis at several congresses and published articles about this topic. She has participated in several international workshops and taken courses at Melbourne University in Australia and Erasmus University in Rotterdam. Cateline’s professional career started as an interim professional from Yacht at the City of The Hague where she still works on various projects, ranging from master planning for derelict industrial areas to concept development for real estate projects which facilitate the creative economy and are spinoff projects for the area’s development. Recently, she started working on the development of a science businesspark in Delft. She is a member of the Dutch urban design and planning association (BNSP young professionals) and YURP.
Petra Hirschler -Treasurer
Lived in Vienna ever since and graduated from the Vienna University of Technology (MSc. Urban and Regional Planning, 1998). Worked with a consultancy for 10 years, specializing in regional development projects in Central and Eastern Europe. Today, is employed at the Department for Spatial Development, Infrastructure and Environmental Planning (UT Vienna), center of regional planning and regional development. Teaches regional planning and regional development and organizes international student projects. Fields of research: regional planning and development, cross-border cooperation, European Union policies and gender mainstreaming.
Andreas Dillinger - Chief information officer (CIO)
Born in Austria. Began studying in Vienna in 2000, graduated from Vienna University of Technology in 2006 (MSc/Dipl.-Ing. in Spatial Planning) and is ongoing PhD student. Gained experience in cross-border and regional planning as well as regional development. Works at mecca-consulting engineers in the fields of rural and endogenous development, Learning Regions, funding advice and moderation. Stephen A. Goldsmith
Stephen Goldsmith is Director of the Center for the Living City, an organization inspired by the work of Jane Jacobs and founded with her encouragement. Among the Center’s projects is coordinating the annual Jane’s Walk program throughout the United States (www.janeswalkusa.org). As a sculptor and craftsman, his large-scale environmental works and water features can be found throughout Salt Lake City, Utah where he resides. He founded the non-profit organization Artspace, which has developed hundreds of affordable live/work spaces, educational facilities and incubator space for many non-profits in the city’s historic warehouse district. He was the first artist/planning director appointed in a major city in the U.S. During the 2002 Olympics he produced an international symposium and exhibition titled, “The Physical Fitness of Cities: Vision and Ethics in City Building.” He was Director of the Rose Architectural Fellowship for Enterprise Community Partners in Baltimore and is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Utah’s College of Architecture and Planning. Uri Mazor
Born and raised in Israel. Graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY. After practicing for a few years went on for a Master degree in Architecture and Urban Design from Columbia University, New York. Today lives and works in Tel Aviv, Israel, as a junior partner in a firm specializing in a range of planning, urban design and architectural projects throughout the country and abroad. Gained experience in various projects ranging from strategic planning for large regions, through urban renewal projects for different city centers around the country, up to a range of architectural complexes for a choice of uses and locations. Was one of the founding members of the "Young professions forum chamber" in the IAA - the Israeli Architecture Association. Teaches Architecture at the Bezalel Academy of Arts, Jerusalem, Israel.
