Stephen A. Goldsmith - President

Stephen Goldsmith is Director of the Center for the Living City, an organization inspired by the work of Jane Jacobs and founded with her encouragement. Among the Center’s projects is coordinating the annual Jane’s Walk program throughout the United States (www.janeswalkusa.org). As a sculptor and craftsman, his large-scale environmental works and water features can be found throughout Salt Lake City, Utah where he resides.  He founded the non-profit organization Artspace, which has developed hundreds of affordable live/work spaces, educational facilities and incubator space for many non-profits in the city’s historic warehouse district.  He was the first artist/planning director appointed in a major city in the U.S.  During the 2002 Olympics he produced an international symposium and exhibition titled, “The Physical Fitness of Cities: Vision and Ethics in City Building.” He was Director of the Rose Architectural Fellowship for Enterprise Community Partners in Baltimore and is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Utah’s College of Architecture and Planning. Han Joosten - Vice President for internal affairs

Portrait: Han JoostenBorn in 1959 and still living in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, has studied human geography and regional planning at the Free University in Amsterdam (1977-1986, drs.-degree). He has started his carreer as a market researcher in the field of office and shopping centre development at Kolpron Consultants in Rotterdam. In the year 1990 he moved to Berlin to become the managing director of the Kolpron Stadtentwicklung- und Immobilienforschungsgesellschaft (real estate consultancy). His office grew up to 7 academic researchers and he advised private developers, investors and banks, but also the city government of Berlin and cities in Brandenburg on many important issues, like residential projects, shopping streets and demographic developments. Since 1995 he is working for the largest Dutch residential developer Bouwfonds, a housing company at that time owned by the Dutch municipalities. Han is a member of Scupad since 1990.

Catelijne Elissen - Secretary & editor of the newsletter

Pic: Catelijne ElissenCatelijne Elissen is from The Netherlands. In 1999 she began studying Architecture at Delft University of Technology from which she holds a Master’s degree in Urbanism. Her Master’s thesis involved research about urban regeneration of post-industrial cities in NW Europe. She presented her thesis at several congresses and published articles about this topic. She has participated in several international workshops and taken courses at Melbourne University in Australia and Erasmus University in Rotterdam. Cateline’s professional career started as an interim professional from Yacht at the City of The Hague where she still works on various projects, ranging from master planning for derelict industrial areas to concept development for real estate projects which facilitate the creative economy and are spinoff projects for the area’s development. Recently, she started working on the development of a science businesspark in Delft. She is a member of the Dutch urban design and planning association (BNSP young professionals) and YURP.

Petra Hirschler -Treasurer

Petra HirschlerLived in Vienna ever since and graduated from the Vienna University of Technology (MSc. Urban and Regional Planning, 1998). Worked with a consultancy for 10 years, specializing in regional development projects in Central and Eastern Europe. Today, is employed at the Department for Spatial Development, Infrastructure and Environmental Planning (UT Vienna), center of regional planning and regional development. Teaches regional planning and regional development and organizes international student projects. Fields of research: regional planning and development, cross-border cooperation, European Union policies and gender mainstreaming.

Andreas Dillinger - Chief information officer (CIO)

Born in Austria. Began studying in Vienna in 2000, graduated from Vienna University of Technology in 2006 (MSc/Dipl.-Ing. in Spatial Planning) and is ongoing PhD student. Gained experience in cross-border and regional planning as well as regional development. Worked at mecca-consulting engineers in the fields of rural and endogenous development, Learning Regions, funding advice and moderation. Started to work for the project "ONSS - Oman National Spatial Strategy" at Vienna University of Technology 2011. His responsibility: Planning and Scientific Management within ONSS. Andreas Schulze Bäing

Andreas Schulze BäingAndreas Schulze Bäing studied Raumplanung/Spatial Planning at the University of Dortmund/Germany, graduating in 2001 (Dipl.-Ing.) with a diploma thesis about reurbanisation and the future of work in the compact city (http://www.baeing.de/). Following this he worked from 2001 to 2003 at the Institute of Spatial Planning on a research project about the long-term future of the Ruhrgebiet called Städteregion Ruhr 2030 (http://www.ruhr-2030.de/). This included themes such as spatial analysis, regional governance and inter-municipal cooperation. In 2003 he moved to Liverpool/UK to work on a PhD project at the Department of Civic Design investigating the evidence base for rural-urban relationships. In parallel to the PhD work he also participated in other planning-related research projects.
Andreas contributed to a study for the Royal Town Planning Institute developing an evidence base for national spatial planning (http://www.rtpi.org.uk/) and he participated in the international ideas competition „shrinking cities“. After finishing the PhD he joined the Centre for Urban Policy Studies at the University of Manchester as a post-doctoral research fellow in November 2007 for a research project in collaboration with English Partnerships. This project aimed at investigating the links between social change and change in urban environments, primarily investigating the socio-economic impact of strategic brownfield reuse for housing. More recently Andreas has worked on a report for the UK Housing and Neighbourhood Monitor (http://www.hnm.org.uk/), contributed to a project on the geography of housing market areas in England (http://www.communities.gov.uk) and a project about designing out crime in housing planning. Andreas is a member of the Town and Country Planning Association.

Zegeye Cherenet

Zegeye CherenetZegeye Chrenet Mamo studied architecture and town planning at Addis Ababa university, holds Master of Architecture degree from IIT, Roorkee - India. Since 1998, he has been teaching architectural design and construction and currently holds the chair of Architecture and design at EiABC-AAU. He was guest lecturer in various  universities in Ethiopia and abroad on theories of architecture, vernacular architecture in Ethiopia and contemporary trends of urbanization in Ethiopia and Africa. In 2006/2007 he was also an academic guest at the Department of Architecture at theSwiss Federal Institute of Technology -ETH in Zurich, teaching Design and Construction studios. He also has served as the general secretary of the Association of Ethiopian Architects (AEA). In addition to teaching architectural design he has served as a deputy scientific director of EiABC(from its establishment to March 2011) and  also runs his practice with his partners (oadus plc) in Addis Ababa. He has designed and realized a variety of private and public projects in Ethiopia. Currently he is conducting a research for his doctoral degree in HCU-Germany on designing the informal- searching strategies for water sensitive urbanization.

Joris Quaedflieg

Joris QuaedfliegWas born in Maastricht in the Netherlands. He studied at Delft University of Technology and holds a master’s degree in Urbanism. During his study he did an internship at the Haridwar Development Authority on the planning of this pilgrim city situated at the banks of the Ganga River in India. His home city now is Rotterdam. He works as a consultant in urban development at Bureau Stedelijke Planning. This Dutch office advises both public bodies as market parties on different fields: project management, city development, urban economy, retail projects and implementation strategies. He joined SCUPAD in 2008.
